Every single moment of our life is an opportunity to re-dream our lives. The more aware you become, the more you realize that every single thought shapes our experience of reality.
We are filled with thousands of thoughts that create confusion, fear, hesitation and negativity, which keep us bound in a reality that we don’t enjoy, much less thrive in. If you’re like most people in the world, the majority of your thoughts are limiting and inhibit your inner brilliance from shining forth. Discerning the content of our mind with shrewd honesty is the first step towards re-dreaming our world.
In one of his most essential works, Vivekachudamani -The Crest Jewel of Discrimination, Sri Adi Sankaracharya, the 8th-century Indian exponent of Advaita Vedanta, or non-dual philosophy, reminds the reader over and over of the importance of discrimination.
“Brahman is the Truth, and the world is unreal.’ It is this realization that is considered discrimination between the permanent and the impermanent.”
The cultivation of discernment, or Viveka, has long been held as a central practice in ancient spirituality to bring clarity and freedom. In the spiritual context, the discernment focuses on identifying our lives’ stable background and seeing the passing transience of our thoughts, emotions, and even body as changing reality they are. This discernment encourages us to give less importance and mental energy to what is fleeting and more attention to what is stable and lasting, thus, establishing more peace and clarity in our hearts.
The practice of discernment allows us to filter our experience and orient our beings to something more stable and profound. The more we give attention to the unchanging background of our lives, the more clearly we see how we are swayed and influenced by passing thoughts and begin to slowly disregard their competing voices. Excessive thoughts drain us of our vital energy, clarity and muddle our sense of purpose. The more we cut through mental clutter with the sword of discernment, the more we liberate energy for our deeper purpose to guide us.
Clutter is described as ‘anything that is kept, even though not used, needed or wanted, clutter can also be defined as having a disorganized and overwhelming amount of possessions in our living space, cars or storage areas.’
Indian sages would say the same thing about our own minds. We have an ‘overwhelming amount of thoughts’ that are mostly neither used, needed or wanted and lead to the same psychological stress that prevents us from living with clarity, precision, and effectiveness.
The process of piercing through the cloud of our mental clutter relieves us from the burden of our busy minds and opens up an original and spacious expanse that is the true ground of our beings. From this place of freedom, we can tune into the more profound intuition hidden within our hearts and, from this depth, begin the process of re-dreaming.
Allowing thoughts to clutter our minds leads to :
~triggering the cortisol response causing increased tension and anxiety
~inability to perceive what our hearts truly want
~increased procrastination due to lack of a clear vision
~negative, and ultimately false, self-image
~fear and hesitation instead of trust and courage
~a view of reality based more on our conditioned patterns than truth
Exercising discernment will lead to higher levels of focus and an increasing ability to filter all information that enters our brain. When we are more clear on what is vital and vital within our own minds, we become adept at identifying what type of information nourishes our purpose and deeper direction in life. This creates an elevated radar that helps us swiftly navigate the digital landscape of information overload, gravitate towards input that is conducive to our growth, and discard irrelevant and distracting flotsam.
The famous Japanese swordsman and author Miyajoto Musashi reminds us of returning to the simplicity and central point of life. “The essential is to think that anything you are doing has to become the occasion for slashing. You must examine this well.”
Imagine if every thought, every article, every conversation and every social media interaction was met with the vigorous discernment of a Samurai warrior. How much of what we think, consume and converse can be slashed to its bare minimum? And what power and freedom would remain after we discard the weight and confusion born of a cluttered and distressed mind?
The Zen tradition advises us to meditate as if our hair were on fire. When we slice through every moment of our mental life with such intensity, we burn away countless useless thoughts and reassert the primal potency of our true self. The more we continue this practice, our life’s true aim presents itself, and we move with more unimpeded enthusiasm towards re-dreaming our reality. We begin to live with inspiration from the oasis in our hearts and not the desert of our minds.
In my own life, I can see the hold social media can have over me. When I’m unaware, a few seconds turn into a few minutes, one post leads to the next, and before I know it, I’ve lost my momentum and my mind is cluttered. However, when I read with discernment, I can see where every post and word fits into my overall aim in life; information absorbed through the lens of discernment goes through an intrinsic organizing process and shapes my mind in a coherent way with my deeper, more stable self.
The more we exercise discernment in our life the more substantial the essential becomes. A strength and stability build within our hearts’ core that orients all other thoughts and information towards the ultimate aim of our hearts. When we root our consciousness in the stable and unchanging background of who we are, the intelligence of this background is able to assert its wisdom and guide our minds and lives in a more coherent way that allows us to align to a truer and more meaningful purpose. From this clarity, we realize that a vast intelligence is reshaping our lives as a reflection of a hidden power, joy, love and harmony. From this reorientation of our internal minds, we then realize that we have the ability to plant seeds not only our own mind but the collective mind, allowing us to and surely re-dream the entire world.
